How to Cook Jasmine Rice Perfectly Every Time

Discover the foolproof method to make fluffy, fragrant jasmine rice — the perfect side dish for any Thai meal.

🌾 What Is Jasmine Rice?

Jasmine rice is a long-grain variety of fragrant rice native to Thailand. Known for its slightly sticky texture, floral aroma, and soft bite, it’s the perfect partner to dishes like Thai curries, stir-fries, and grilled meats.

🍳 Methods to Cook Jasmine Rice Perfectly

1. Stovetop Method (Traditional Way)

✅ Ingredients:

  • 1 cup jasmine rice
  • 1¼ cups water
  • Pinch of salt (optional)

🥣 Instructions:

  1. Rinse the rice in cold water until the water runs clear.
  2. Combine rice and water in a pot.
  3. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 12–15 minutes.
  4. Turn off heat and let it rest for 10 minutes (keep lid on).
  5. Fluff with a fork and serve.

👉 Tip: Don’t lift the lid while cooking!

2. Rice Cooker Method (Easiest & Consistent)

  • Rinse rice as above.
  • Use a 1:1.1 water-to-rice ratio (or follow your rice cooker’s guide).
  • Let it rest for 5–10 minutes after it switches to “warm.”
  • Fluff and enjoy!

3. Instant Pot Method

Settings:

  • 1 cup rice : 1 cup water
  • Use “Rice” or “Pressure Cook” for 3–4 minutes
  • Natural pressure release for 10 minutes

💡 Tips for Perfect Jasmine Rice

  • Always rinse the rice. It removes excess starch and prevents gumminess.
  • Use the correct water ratio. Too much = mushy; too little = undercooked.
  • Resting time is key. It helps redistribute moisture evenly.
  • Store in a sealed container if prepping in advance.

🍴 What to Serve with Jasmine Rice?

  • Thai Green Curry
  • Pad Krapow (Spicy Basil Stir Fry)
  • Thai Grilled Chicken (Gai Yang)
  • Tom Yum Soup
